  • KritzKast #362: How to get in Overwatch BETA

WidowMaker_b1There’s not really been an update this week, not to TF2 at least. This would have made for a really short podcast. That’s not the full story though since Team Fortress 2 Competitive gets a new logo, which makes us think something is about to start happening here. Which Kotau appears to have picked up on.

As luck would have it, KritzKast made it into the Overwatch BETA. Well, I say luck…

Biggest changes are that we now have a new game mode, KOTH Control, and two new maps.

Oh and player progression, which slowly reveals skins, emotes, sprays and animations.

Four of the usual’s are joined by the infamous fatmop for this the one hundred and ninety seventh episode. Did i say fatmop? I meant Sal….you know Sal. What do you mean you don’t know Sal. Well get to listening, then you’ll know who Sal is. This week we give our opinions on the Saxxy winners. In fact its a very Saxxy episode. We go through the 3 Saxxy items that drop in the game, The Tuxxy, Saxxy Clapper Badge and the Memory Maker. Not only that but we give you a look at a real life saxxy to be unveiled at the spike video game awards. Like I said, Its a very saxxy show.

Out side the Saxxys we celebrate women…..that sounded less sexist in my head, sorry about that. I am of course talking about the NA vs EU ladies showmatch ran by the Round Robin crew. If you’d like to have a look at the match, click here. We also talk about TF2Center.com, a possible replacement for the slightly abandoned TF2Lobby.com. However, its not up and running yet, but they have been working on it for 3 months in secret and estimate another 3 more before going public. To hear more about the project why not listen to the latest episode of Work In Progress, where Agro talks with Marty, the man behind it all.

Over at TF2Maps.net they are having another of their highly popular mapping contests. This time its all about MvM, So if you’ve always wanted to make an MvM map, or just want to watch other people try, Head on over to mvm.tf2maps.net and get all the details. Just remember you’ve got until early February to get it done.

We also talk about how Steam vouchers have made their way over to the UK and show you a crazy video of a TF2 mode based on Binding of Issaac. Yep. thats right. crazy times indeed. Did we mention we had Sal on this episode?

You’d think with just 2 hosts, We wouldn’t have a lot to talk about. But what actually happens is with out the other hosts to keep us on track, we can talk about whatever we want. it just so happens what we want to talk about it TF2. Lucky us. So we start by talking about how valve is reaching out to get hold of as many user-created halloween themed items ready for their upcoming halloween update. So if your an item creator, think haunting thoughts and get out there and make us some spooky items.

However the big news this week is all the leagues starting up again. UGC have started their 8th Highlander season and also pushed season 10 of their 6v6 league. Over at Ozfortress, they have launched OWL (Oz Winter League) with cash prizes for not only the top 3 teams, but for any Prem team that wins a MAP. Over at ETF2L, they have just started the 13th 6v6 season. But more impressively, they have also found a way to sniff out hackers and cheaters once and for all.

However if its SFM your more interested in, this week is critter week. What does that mean? it means that a large number of people are making short films based on the theme of “Critters”. Can anybody say headcrabs? However if your more interested in a Pick up group, then maybe you might want to take a look at the IRC Channel #TF2MIX. The idea is for even new players to be able to get into a pick up group and be part of the action.

For all you Mann vs Machine server admins out there, Have you seen mvmwaves.com? its a website that lets you design your own custom waves of machines. Trust us when we say its awesome. Then lastly we talk about the first 10 games that have been greenlit…..or greenlighted, we still don’t know how to say it.

src=”http://wiki.teamfortress.com/w/images/c/c9/CrimeCraft_scout_and_heavy.png” alt=”” width=”281″ height=”175″>Team Fortress 2 updates are like busses; you wait for a few weeks for one to show up then two come along at once. It would have been easier to walk. Valve wish us to celebrate a free to play game, CrimeCraft by offering up Texas Half-Pants and a Bolt Action Blitzer if you manage to survive 6 levels of this uninspired game. Strange parts become removable and we mourn the loss of the dispenser’s ability to retain your overheal. The engie-nurf continues with buildings now granting medics charge is destroyed with their Übersaw. At least the engie gets to wear the Teufort Tooth Kicker if you really want to cowboy him up.

Currently unobtainable, the Mysterious Promo 2 bundle, containing only the Flare Gun is added. What can that be? If you don’t know, you’re in good company.

Wireplay drop their long running 6v6 tournament in favour of a Highlander league. Their last season of 6v6 was plagued with team drop outs. Lets hope this new direction pays dividends for them. KritzKast Distinguished Ducks have signed up already.

To top it all off we have your emails and a couple of movies from the best of the best in 6v6 TF2, Epsilon Esports and coverage of i43.

This week we have Arnold, the creator of Gullywash* – the most recent community map to be officially made part of the game. He’ll share with us details of his new masterpiece map, cp_croissant, plus how it’s become the center of attention on the competitive scene.

*To thank him more than we can, Go and buy yourself a cp_gullywash Map Stamp from the in-game store.

The Steambox might be back on the table again. Valve are advertising for hardware engineers. That’s right, the software guys are looking for hardware people to join the team. Bundle that with Tim Cook (Apple CEO) dropping by Valve Software and you have yourself a very curious puzzle indeed

Some Ozzi nutter had bet $1000 on the outcome of a single game of MGE TF2 just so he could meet someone.

Reddit Round Robin have entered their fourth iteration. Watch your fill of the matches here.

Lastly, A video that you all need to see. With audio borrowed from the late great Charlie Chaplin, mixed with video and graphics from our favourite game. It must be Dictator, By Shwiggan.

The TF2 Mix-up website was launched this week. Featuring Robin walker, Notch, Freddie Wong, Nathan Purkeypile (Bethesda), Yogscast, Brian Brushwood, Veronica Belmont, CaptainSparklez and so many others. There are more of our gaming heroes on the match roster than Gabe Newell could recruit in a week of headhunting, probably. Despite this there’s still three slots left, to be filled by you. We tell you how on this week’s show.

TF2’s Beta gets an update. In the long tradition of beta updates this basically means a bunch of fresh new nurfs for you to cope with. The Enforcer is slower to fire and trading now impossible.

Back in the real game, Sniper gets a leather backpack, the Cozy Camper, complete with dangling piss jar and koala. Solider’s buff/rage meters are fixed and Pyro’s Phlogistinator gets a couple of nerfs. Whom ever guessed “QR code” as the language for “Updating localization files”, take a drink.

Steam Powered User Forums ( or SPUF for short) finally have their own subsection just for the competitive players. This was largely the result of Ashkan, our player of the week, buiding a solid presentation to put before the Valve lot. Well done mate, though Extine pushing the point home can’t have harmed either.

As for the quickies, we make a good shot at them being the longies:

    • Ruskeydoo reports on a worrying trend of item makers’ accounts being hacked to get at their self-made hats
    • Our Steam friend Lucky Luke shows us how your friends list now has a search bar
    • Tempest talks to mnemosynaut about his recent contributions to the game
    • Collection packs are added to Steam Workshop
    • rubixRandomHero creates some cute knitted TF2 friends
  • 158 Lo-Fi World Tour

    [soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1507187056″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Well this was a week. We thought we’d seen it all, but we are always surprised by some of the things that manage to find their way onto the show. This week the big thing is simply a rumor. We could be talking about something that will never happen. But when that this is a steam console, its worth talking about. Plus with Valves track record, it would not be a huge leap of the imagination that this information was leaked out.

If we can drag you back to reality for just a moment. Valve gave us a couple of things to talk about this week. The patch was all about the Teufort Tooth kicker. The boots that make you look more handsome that a cowboy wrestling a pig. Not only that, but valve blogged about a great web comic that you all need to read….yes even you Timmy.

Maybe the biggest news is that the Kritzkast Lo-Fi Offclass Cup is going to be held in both South Afica and Asia. We always love it when different groups want to play with our ideas and make them their own. We love it even more when small or starting groups of gamers use it as a way to increase the number of people playing team fortress. With stunning posters from both 16bittf and Sandvichfort, we are hoping that people will have as much fun with the cups as we do watching them.

Speaking of watching things, This week could almost be called the video of awesome videos. There were 3 wanted to talk about on the show this week. One of them taught you how to use the TF2 wiki. Yes we know. you might already know how to use it. but please check it out, its fantastic. The next is from Maxofs2d and is a trailer for his highly anticipated Earthbound Fortress 2 series. I hope it’s as good as the trailer makes it look. The last one is really a thank you from last week’s guest Dusty Old Roses. Want to see what we are like in public, this gives you a fairly good idea.

  • 143 Let us never speak of this again

    [soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/1507169407″ params=”color=#ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&show_teaser=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

This is the week that the unthinkable happened. Steam was compromised. The question rises, our are personal details still safe? We’ve looked into the details of the hack, How, when and why, to bring you as much information about it as we can. We’ll try our best to make you feel safe, but alas, only valve can be the ones to rest our minds fully. For more information please visit this thread.

Luckily, the hack isn’t the only piece of news this week, or we would be crying all through the show. TF2 also got 3 new promo items directly from Saints row the third. Not to mention a few changes to make thing run smoother.

Speaking of running smoother, the Beta also got a good fix this week. bringing it up to date with recently changes to the main game and also testing out new code that should make the game run smoother on older machines.

But its not just valve that have been making heads lines this week. ETF2L started its highlander league and agro got to have a quick shoutcast. We also followed eXtine into a comic book store as he picked up the copy of “The Scarface” and had it signed by valve employees

Plus this week was the week that teamfortress.tv launched, a new site showcasing some of the best live streams of Pro TF2 players…….and 1 fascinating TF2 podkast.

Lastly, we couldn’t let the launch of Skyrim pass without mentioning this graphics comparison sent to us from a fan.

BOO! Not the scariest of introductions, but it’s hard to be evil when you play Valve games. The Third Annual Scream Fortress kicked in this week, with a new map designed for the holiday period. Don’t worry if you haven’t had chance to play yet as it doesn’t end until 6th November. This gives you plenty of time to ogle the all-seeing eye that is Monoculus on Eyeaduct. Even after this Halloween event has died out the effects will live on with a mass of new Halloween items, new unusual effects and new voice lines all rising from the grave every time the moon is full again. AWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Plus, to keep the horror flowing, Valve have given us another comic depicting the origins of Monoculus. Creep under your covers, get out the torch and read it with care. For surely it’s too late we cry, “too late!” To include these sheets in the forthcoming comic collections of Dark Horse.

This weeks video of the week (no this isn’t a new section, its just we really like this video and think it should be viewed by all) shows off what could be done with all the footage valve has made for “meet the videos”. Could this video spark valve into kick starting its TF2 TV series project?

We also ask ourselves, “why do 30% of TF2 players buy something in the store, when most F2P games only get about 2-3%?” Gabe revealed this amazing stat in a recent interview. Maybe we think we know, maybe.

Lastly Pat’s bloody sack conceals a mash-up voice clip, HHH’s head and icon replacements. All provided by you, the haunting audience.
